                Notes;
                July 11th to 20th
                     2007

                                One
Is it hydrogen that plaster gives off? Seems when working with large qualitites, it stultifies. I do know it was hydrogen and hydrogen sulfide the pulp produced and from its patina the probable genus of the flora. It was it had been soaking out of doors for a month and has a yellow orange attribute.
The molds were robust, no worry about water hastening there decomposition and there was no problem of adherence of the pulp to the molds - lift one end tap and “slump” out it drop.
The weather was wet the days I was applying varnish  used the shead for shelter from the smell has yet to dissipate.
I do think I’ll look through my journals to track the inception- I jotted a drawing down day after having the a finished  idea all seemed a bit pernicious . The hour of thought that suited the winter night.
I have photographed the process, no candid shots of myself at work although this might have been a good idea, just molds the pulp and soon the dried works. Also Expect if I leave them till Monday they’ll be dry enough to move indoors.
It’s the smell that defines their appearance creates a leaden view. Have applied bleach several times to the surface of the pulp with a thought to the necessity of limiting the growth. Could have wonder at the extent it might have attained during the month it had to soak. Though it seems only to have interrupted the growth and smell of the layer of bacteria growing on its shaded  surface.
In the news a conglomerate which owned a portion of  Moroccan cardboard manufacturer Fruit boxes (Mediterranean market) bought the remaining  60% shares these will bring the companies  interest to 100%. Their interest in the company began in October 2005.

                                 Two
I was reading at my journals, seems I made a sketch of the molds and such on August 19th 2006 at that time I had already Bought some of the clay plaster and would buy more in the next year. Still have not even begun the altered perspective photos I had thought so clearly the winter before last. Should make some point of resolving it. Has more of an aspect of craft the “wonder if it would work” The collection is extensive but I’m focused on just one or two images. Might now just go thought a disk of pictures and see what would work.
Reading some background on the news I learned that Delhi has one of the largest fruit and vegetable markets in Asia. It has since been relocated near a space were. slum had been the area has also been redeveloped for parks and a boulevard(a year later plans for other areas were put forward but these plans were abandoned or delayed).

                                Three

Looked for references pertaining to the Dona Rosa which was traveling from Talusao on December 1987 too when it collided with a small tanker. It was the worst maritime disaster ever. There was also an accident in Dec 1999 and a fire In January 2004 which after some time was said to be a terrorist act. Most recently a storm is blamed for the presumed deaths of 16 when an inter island ferry sunk July 12th 2007.
I think this has an influence - perhaps a direct one on the choice of pictures, witch never seem to make the” gunwale connection” walks to the peer this. I remember the walk buy the lake ending as the trail petered out buy a bramble and the small dock near that point next I felt my health in such a way was after being at a museum and with some thought walked towards the water were the road curved to  right. I bought food but most was wasted losing my appetite. It was a beautiful day.
“This is the horse meat sir but I’d be danged if I can get the horse to eat it. “

                             Four
The story of a work in plaster finished  last winter. It was at its inception transfers (national geographics and a science article witch were reversed so as too be legible) to be applied to canvas board prepared with coatings of white and green plaster this was done august-September 2005 the results were put aside feeling they were not bold or clear enough. In November- December 2006 a resolution suggested itself these works were then pressed into a layer of colored plaster over a inch deep. The result had an incidental resemblance to Televisions or monitors.
Peshawar Karakoram mountains maps of Africa text all nearly indecipherable. A clerk commented while Purchasing the plaster “Must be important to use your own”. I finished the pieces with a rasp - happy with the result.
Well back to the subject which was a magazine on Peshawar which I had on extra copy of. The news a couple of month ago had reference to a man carrying a sack sitting out side a hotel restaurant owned by  Uzbek the blast followed. At the time this was topical I had thoughts of a bike ride while quite young were I met two acquaintances. Could look for the date of that magazine as the only similar memory would be its article on amputee and the wheel chairs supplied to them Last I thought of any of this was years ago when they revamped a old post office for universal access.
These plaster works were finished while I was shopping around as an aside for National Geographic that had reference too kashmir.

                            Five
The only other artist I know of who used newsprint pulp as a medium sculpturally I saw in a local gallery in the early 80's She was showing new works  at another local gallery just a week or two ago.
The shape of here new work was that of a tree trunk stuffed with pills and comforters. News three weeks ago was of a girl and her Grandfather swept away while swimming he drowned and she was able to grab a branch too pull her self out - walked nearly 24 hours right too the camp set up by her rescuers.
The port of call buy a U.S. Carrier to Indian ports finished a week ago. The Indian papers were full of news articles as to the possible radiation hazzard posed.
I think I might have been near the area of London where an attempted car bombing took place at the end of last month.  I found looking for were a bomb in Gorakhpure went off, less than what I expected .
Thought about the essay I pieced together from internet articles it was auctioned at a fund raiser in 2005? For $20.00 what I did think is story of the origins of the hill upon which Hari Parbat rests It says that a capricious Dragon was crushed beneath a stone herald by a God and that his last breath accounts for a particular feature of the hill.
I think I’ll store the works in fruit boxes until they are completely dry.

                              Six
All the news reports I read seemed interesting they described the ships and dates of accidents many around times which were difficult for myself.
Thought I would build boxes for them using a router  nails glue saw and varnish could look nice need to find a spot where they can be stored out of the way no other plans for them.
Wonder what grew on them it needs light as the undersides of them ane clear. Suspect it’s a bacteria or it could be a yeast, mold or fungus. It began while the pulp was soaking and continued even after applications of bleach. It’s  light tan with a hint of orange in color and the smell of hydrogen sulfide was noticeable while casting mostly thought it had a pond scum smell.

                                       Seven
The 16th Battalions attack formation was almost identical with that of April 9th. The plan was as follows- Number 2 (Major a Gilliat) and Number 1 (Lieutenant Petrie) Companies (right to left) each on a two platoon front were detailed to capture the first objective or “Blue line” Number 4 Company (Major Murphy) advanced behind Number 2 and 1 on the same frontage four platoons abreast as far as the first objective. During the pause there it passed through Number 2 and 1 and closed to the left of 2 platoon frontage in front of Number 1. Number 2 then moved ahead and alined itself with Number 4 and these two units advanced to attack the final objective “Green line” Number 3 Company (Lieutenant G.F. mason supplied the ‘moppers up’.

                                    Eight
Thought I would make shelves of press board  so they can be stacked would be a chance to use some varnish I have as well as I have all the tools I would need.
The past seems to have lead to the works a temples I’ve never been to and were noticeably absent, much more a land traveled and sky shopped.

                                   Nine
The four images, of note is the orange door on the temple surrounded by water it is a modern addition. The other a fence of green and yellow pickets a new concrete roof is evident in some photos and it faces a pair of cistern of modern times. The winter scene of two persons in a cart passing along a nondescript road contrasts with my memory of departing the valley.
The Last picture is that flattish one with a greater relief, this work used a photo from the internet. The variation of light and technique resulted in that a spectrum of rock colors were to be seen in the hundred or so photographs. The majority ranged from yellow though orange. I was taken with the subject as it was in Arabia where I feel it could more accurately be of an orange hue. The idea of a niche climbed to along stairs as rendered in the work almost creates a space for the eye to travel ( french airliner, Jordanian temple, Medea, Yemen temple).

                                 Ten
Seems there has been a real worsening of the situation in Pakistan construction consortium which built a large dam in the north was bought buy another firm just three months ago it was based in the American North west.
I think are related to the ferries which made the news with various accidents, river ferry in Afghanistan, Philippine ferry bombed or sunk. American mining company to ground it all which once operated one of the longest conveyers to ship oar to boats off shore witch was abandoned decades ago..

‘The Visual Experience’
I look closely at your eyes when they change
in this way they convey to me the world in a look
Example
I see: you look - impetuously-
at the impetuous water of the Aar
I pulled my gaze away. I looked - and you transported the emerald of the Aar
onto the white walls of the house becoming green
for - look! - become pink under my eyes
Thus colors are exchanged with you
contrasted in my eye (and then in the verb)
This diligent tender and familiar thing
the visual experience.

                                                                              Julian Przybos
‘To an Unknown Person’
abruptly
you detach yourself
from the confused shapes in the street
against the relief of legs
                                      Of the face
you-half approach
I-half meet you
oh how I regret
this always invisible side!
You-half move away:
the movement of others
                                     Cut you
                                                  Into smaller and smaller pieces
nothing of you is left with me
suddenly
                                                                        Miron Bialoszewski
‘Checked by Oneself’
The chair is there
the article of truth
its own sculpture
linked together in a single fasiculus: the abstraction of reality
If broke
It is still a shape
this way-a candlestick
this way-a bull’s head
The abstracts
a whole mass of realities
it is linked together in a single fasiculus
the reality of abstraction in the repository of truth

‘How Easy It Is to Lose Faith’
The horse and cart went past
I look. I believe in them
It is dark
The horse and cart went past
But the horse had a horse
The cart had a cart
They were taking these
great doubles
against the background of the acacias
And I already found it difficult to believe
in the horse and cart
                                                                                      Miron Bialosewski

‘Green there four he is’
Are you... are you not...
believe in you or doubt
in that which you are -
     or ever weather
     you were of nothing
     - - green you are -
     in the moon’s glaze
     oh winter countryside
the earthen ware simply
     uninhabited
     and cold -
     decorated with trees and mist
     around the edge
And when I know nothing about you
neither the worm in the microuoid
    which gnaws you
nor that which one calls snow
     village’s end
     death
     of the moonlit night
you can play me
the most beautiful part of uneasiness.
                                                                                Julian Pezybos

‘Wood Engraving’
The flat winter countryside-wood engraving
the black trees on white
The jackdaw traced aline from the roof to the cherry tree
That he would appear and shine under the bark
of an old pear tree - Arxhmaster! And hardly
revealed, that he would Arch - speak
of the incredible nonsense of Czarnolas!
Voices were calling help in the double orchard and I called
for help in golden tongues and wanting and not - wanting
with my numbered hands awkwardly
I planted in the cold view plied up with snow
the tree drawn in the engraving with a single line
Hokusai wanted to express the world within a single line
You say it with a single sentence.
Lift your thawed vision from the wall of snow
